Fortescue Ltd (ASX: FMG) is one of the world’s largest iron ore producers and Australia’s third-largest mining company by market capitalisation. The company owns and operates an integrated mining, rail and port system in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, shipping iron ore to steel mills across Asia and beyond. Fortescue also holds a 69% equity interest in the Iron Bridge Magnetite project, which produces high-grade iron ore concentrate. Through Fortescue Energy, the company is pursuing a bold decarbonisation agenda targeting Real Zero emissions from its own operations and the development of green energy infrastructure across the Pilbara and internationally.
The global demand for iron ore is underpinned by one of the most durable structural trends in the commodities sector — the ongoing urbanisation and industrialisation of developing economies, combined with the emerging requirement for high-grade iron ore feedstock in the production of green steel.
Global crude steel production remains at multi-billion tonne annual levels, with China alone producing over one billion tonnes per year and continuing to invest in infrastructure, construction and manufacturing at a scale that requires sustained iron ore imports. Beyond China, steel demand growth across India, Southeast Asia and the broader developing world represents an additional multi-decade tailwind that is structural rather than cyclical in nature. At the same time, the global steel industry’s transition toward lower-emission production methods — including electric arc furnace technology and direct reduced iron — is creating new and growing demand specifically for high-grade iron ore products such as the magnetite concentrate produced at Iron Bridge.
This structural backdrop is irreversible. Fortescue’s positioning as one of the world’s lowest-cost iron ore producers, with a fully integrated Pilbara supply chain, a diversified product portfolio spanning both Hematite and high-grade magnetite concentrate, and a rapidly advancing decarbonisation program, places it at the centre of both today’s steel market and tomorrow’s green steel transition.
Fortescue delivered an outstanding operational result in FY26, achieving record total shipments for the first time in the company’s history while maintaining strict cost discipline in the face of ongoing inflationary pressures.
Total iron ore shipments reached 201.3Mt in FY26 — breaking through 200Mt for the first time — comprising 192.3Mt of Hematite and 9.0Mt of Iron Bridge Concentrate. Iron Bridge shipments grew 27% year-on-year, reflecting the ongoing ramp-up of the magnetite operation. The Hematite C1 unit cost for FY26 was US$18.74/wmt, within guidance at the assumed exchange rate despite elevated diesel prices and ongoing inflationary pressures, reflecting the strength of Fortescue’s integrated supply chain and continued focus on productivity.
The Hematite realised price for FY26 was US$91/dmt, representing 88% of the average Platts 61% CFR Index. The Iron Bridge Concentrate realised price for FY26 was US$120/dmt, representing 101% of the average Platts 65% CFR Index and 117% of the Platts 61% CFR Index — a powerful demonstration of the premium value delivered by high-grade magnetite concentrate in an increasingly quality-conscious steel market.
Fortescue closed the June Quarter with a cash balance of US$5.1 billion and net debt of US$0.8 billion, after capital expenditure of US$3.6 billion across FY26. Looking to FY27, total shipment guidance of 197–207Mt including 11–14Mt from Iron Bridge reflects a year of continued operational delivery as the magnetite ramp-up continues.
Beyond the core operating platform, Fortescue is executing two transformational initiatives that are expected to materially strengthen the company’s competitive position and earnings quality over the coming decade.
The build-out of Fortescue’s fully integrated green grid across the Pilbara represents one of the most ambitious industrial decarbonisation programs in Australian history. Construction of the 690MW Turner River solar farm commenced during the June Quarter — the final solar installation required to deliver Fortescue’s Real Zero target. Combined with the Nullagine Wind Project, where the first turbines have arrived in the Pilbara using Nabrawind self-erecting technology, and 18 electric excavators now operating across Fortescue’s sites, the company is eliminating diesel from its operations at pace. The commercial logic is compelling — by removing fossil fuel exposure entirely, Fortescue is structurally reducing its cost base and insulating its margins from global energy price volatility in a way that no competitor can easily replicate.
Iron Bridge is the second major catalyst. The magnetite concentrate operation produced 9.0Mt in FY26 and is targeting an annualised production rate of more than 16Mt during FY28, with a nameplate capacity of 22Mtpa. At a realised price premium of 117% of the Platts 61% CFR Index, Iron Bridge is fundamentally upgrading the quality and value of Fortescue’s product mix — shifting the company’s revenue profile toward higher-margin, high-grade products that are structurally better positioned as green steel production scales globally.
Fortescue occupies a commanding position in the global iron ore sector — a record-breaking producer with one of the world’s lowest cost structures, a rapidly growing high-grade product offering through Iron Bridge, and the most advanced industrial decarbonisation program of any major miner in Australia. The company’s green grid initiative is not simply an environmental commitment — it is a structural competitive advantage that will lower costs, attract premium customers, and open new revenue streams in green energy supply to adjacent industries. With record FY26 shipments behind it, a resilient balance sheet and a clear multi-year growth pathway through Iron Bridge and the green grid, Fortescue’s earnings growth profile in the decade ahead is underpinned by both operational excellence and structural transformation. These long-term tailwinds should continue to support the Group’s performance well into the decade ahead.
